Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD) from NIH

Holly Ann Burt, Outreach and Exhibits Coordinator from the Greater Midwest Region NLM Library has shared the following announcement:

The National Library of Medicine Division of Specialized Information Services (SIS) has collaborated with the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) on a new database containing dietary supplement label information. ODS is the lead NIH Institute for dietary supplement information.

The new database, Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD), captures information on dietary supplements' labels and allows the searching, sorting, and filtering capabilities needed by researchers. Its data can be saved and analyzed. It is a significantly larger effort than the current NLM Dietary Supplements Labels Database and already contains 17,000 labels and images of labels. It is expected to grow rapidly over the next three years, eventually covering most of the 55,000 dietary supplement products sold to American consumers.

Health Insurance Marketplace Education

From the National Network of Libraries of Medicine:
The Obama administration kicked off the Health Insurance Marketplace education effort with a new, consumer-focused HealthCare.gov website and the 24-hours-a-day consumer call center to help Americans prepare for open enrollment and ultimately sign up for private health insurance.  The new tools will help Americans understand their choices and select the coverage that best suits their needs when open enrollment in the new Health Insurance Marketplace begins October 1.

HealthCare.gov is the destination for the Health Insurance Marketplace.  Americans may now access new educational information and learn what they can do to begin to get ready for open enrollment this fall.  The website will add functionality over the summer so that, by October, consumers will be able to create accounts, complete an online application, and shop for qualified health plans.  For Spanish speaking consumers, CuidadoDeSalud.gov will also be updated to match HealthCare.gov’s new consumer focus.
Between now and the start of open enrollment, the Marketplace call center will provide educational information and, beginning Oct. 1, 2013, will assist consumers with application completion and plan selection.  In addition to English and Spanish, the call center provides assistance in more than 150 languages through an interpretation and translation service.  Customer service representatives are available for assistance via a toll-free number at 1-800-318-2596 and hearing impaired callers using TTY/TDD technology can dial 1-855-889-4325 for assistance.
If you’re not a consumer looking for health insurance--and you want resources for your organization, technical Marketplace information, or press materials-- visit these sites respectively:
·         Marktplace.CMS.gov
·         CMS.gov/CCIIO
·         HHS.gov/HealthCare

To view the new look and new focus of the website, visit www. HealthCare.gov.

HHS is on target for open enrollment in the Marketplace, which begins Oct. 1, 2013, and other key milestones approaching in the months ahead.  Coverage will begin Jan. 1, 2014.

Natural Standard Adds Healthy Recipes

Natural Standard recently added a Healthy Recipes database to their clinical decision support tool. You will find the recipes on the “TOOLS” pull-down at NaturalStandard.com .

What makes the recipe database special is the ingredients link to their respective Natural Standard monographs. This allows clinicians to easily check for drug interaction, safety and allergy information when recommending these tasty meals. This is also a wonderful reference for planning healthy family meals. Check out chicken and artichokes with pasta to see how these recipes work.

Natural Standard was founded by clinicians and researchers to provide high quality, evidence-based information about complementary and alternative therapies. This data base has an A – Z listing of Foods, Herbs, and Supplements that will provide you with in-depth, evidenced-based information on herbal medicines including uses, dosing recommendations, scientific evidence, safety, interactions, and references.

If you would like more information on and/or assistance in using the Natural Standard database, contact Deb Knippel.

Book Review

18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done
By Peter Bregman

Many of us can identify with the stories related to time management, procrastination, and motivation that Peter Bregman discusses in his book, 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done. Bregman encourages readers to “focus your year on the five areas that will make the most difference in your life.” He provides a practical approach to being successful in your work and/or personal life by taking small bits of time out of your day to check in with yourself to make sure 95% of your actions are in your areas of focus. We often try to get it all done when in reality, it is impossible to get it all done. One particular thought stands out for me:

“The secret to surviving a buffet is to eat fewer things. And the secret to thriving in your life is the same: Do fewer things.”

The author challenges the reader “to choose the one thing you’ve read from this book that will make the most difference in your life and do it” and then see what happens. 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done is available from the Ministry Health Science Library. Contact Deb Knippel if you would like to check out this book from the library.

New Book in the Library: The Relativity Diet: A Diet Theory of Everything

Written by Surgeon Shaun J. Melarvie, MD, on staff at Door County Memorial Hospital

"The Relativity Diet: A Diet Theory of Everything" is in its second printing and has been well-received by its readership since publication in January of this year. The author, Dr. Shaun Melarvie, has been pleased by the feedback he has received, with the consensus being that the book is fun to read and about as page-turning as a "diet book" could be. The truth is that the book isn't written like a conventional diet book. It is more like a philosophy of food and energy, based on science and personal experience, which is written in a conversational narrative that carries the

reader along from the beginning to the end. One reader commented, "The author uses a logical, step by step, scientific approach to a healthy lifestyle, debunking myths and pseudo-science. From the smallest detail, it reveals the mysterious world of quantum physics, re-caps chemistry, and eventually achieves Nirvana." Others have described the book as; "very well written", "a beautiful book" and "I found myself laughing out loud."

You can learn more at the Relativity Blog at www.relativityblog.com or contact a Ministry Librarian to borrow the book.
